About

Fare Share is a grocery store, a meeting place, a wellness resource, a buy-local opportunity.

Fare Share is a natural-foods cooperative; this means that it is owned and supported by member-owners who have equity in the business. However, you don’t need to be an owner to benefit from Fare Share.

Come in to our Main Street store in historic downtown Norway, Maine. Browse the market, meet great people, learn something new, and purchase food and goods. Enjoy the events in the Fare Share Commons: art shows, meetings, lectures, performances, and workshops. Rent space upstairs.

But we warn you: the more time you spend at Fare Share, the more you’ll want to become an owner.

Our Vision

  • To create a high-quality, low-priced, not-for-profit food supply, democratically controlled by member-owners.
  • To educate members of the community on matters of nutrition, agriculture and alternative technology.
  • To develop an information-sharing communication center.
  • To help develop other non-profit goods and services.
  • To help further principles of cooperation, democracy, and self-reliance for the general betterment of members and the community.
  • To provide a welcoming and inspiring space to build a healthy and sustainable community.

History of Fare Share

Fare Share Co-op is an independent member-owned natural food cooperative in historic downtown Norway, Maine. Founded in 1978, Fare Share serves a community with a wide variety of income levels, offering organic and natural foods and products that are locally-sourced, sustainably-produced and ethically-traded. Since 2001, after buying and renovating our building, we have become an energetic Main Street anchor that also includes The Commons, a community space that currently houses the Center for Ecology-Based Economy (CEBE), as well as the upstairs rental offices that include Norway Downtown and Western Foothills Land Trust.
